Relative Space: An Atypical Musical

Writing an original musical (not an adaptation of a movie, not a jukebox musical cobbled together from the pop music catalog of a single artist, not a rewritten revival of a musical) is like spotting an endangered species in the wild. You know they exist, but they’re rare. Break out the binoculars, then, for Relative Space: An Atypical Musical written, directed, played, and sung by women. Playwright Melissa Leilani Larson, who wrote the book for the musical, writes to us about the work, “Relative Space tells an important story—the parallel struggles of a mother and daughter haunted by generational depression and anxiety—in an atypical way. It’s a rock concert layered on top of a family drama. Both the play and the music, written and performed by 16-year-old singer/songwriter Kjersti Long, can stand independent of each other, but together create a work that is relatable and compelling.” (The musical finishes its premiere run in Pleasant Grove, Utah on July 1, and will have an industry reading in New York in October.)
