The World of Mormon Podcasting
We are living in something of a golden age of podcasts, and the Latter-day Saint world is no exception. The Come, Follow Me curriculum led to an explosion of weekly scripture study podcasts with audiences ranging from the academic to the marginalized to the busy mom. Not a week of Sunday School goes by when I don’t hear someone reference podcasts like Unshaken or Don’t Miss This.
But the world of Mormon podcasting goes far beyond that. Many podcasts cover the ever-expanding field of Mormon Studies. If, like me, you’re unable to keep up with the recent proliferation of interesting books, podcasts like Faith Matters, the Maxwell Institute, and Faith and Imagination will give you the Cliff Notes version. Still other podcasts like Fireside with Blair Hodges introduce authors outside of the LDS orbit and ask what members can learn from them.
Podcasts also bring close the experience of members of the Church who we may not otherwise encounter. The Mormon experience is being examined from all angles with podcasts devoted to the experiences of women (Q.More and At Last She Said It), LGTBQ (Sit Down with Sky & Preston), and BIPOC members (Beyond the Block and Tribe of Testimonies) as well as podcasts about mental health and disability (wHoly Human). International podcasts are also starting to pop up (LDS Downunder and De Kast van Mormon).
In the past year, I’ve listened to an interview with one of the founding members of the Garrens comedy troupe (forerunner to Studio C) on Latter Day Lives, leadership wisdom from Leading Saints, a discussion with members living in Ukraine during the ongoing Russian aggression on This Week in Mormons, fully-produced short stories from Dialogue Out Loud, and narrative history from the Joseph Smith Papers Project and Sunstone History.
With the variety of LDS podcasts out there, there’s bound to be one that speaks to you. And if not, it must be time for you to start one.—Liz Busby
