Confidence, Conversations, and Creativity: Past Residents Reflect on the Artists Residency

We’re now in our 3rd year of the Artists Residency at The Center. Before the deadline on March 16th, hundreds of artists will apply to be considered for six spots. We’ve gotten lots of questions about what the residency is like, what to expect, and what artists will gain from the experience. So, we’re sharing what some past residents have said about their time at the Residency - from their favorite parts, to their biggest takeaways and fondest memories.

What was it like arriving in New York?

“The care with which the residency was organised was beautiful. It felt like although I'd landed in the massive city of NYC, I'd arrived in a supportive village that was easy to navigate with my double art-LDS tribe. I felt supported and seen.
I loved the pace of the activities and the corresponding pace of the ideas exchanged and little moments of personal inspiration.”
- Vanessa Cook, choreographer

What was your favorite moment of the week?

“Time in evening discussions with fellow artists. SO filling.” – Darlene Young, writer

Spending time with real NYC people. I absolutely loved exploring the city on my own, but the best memories I made were with the families that I walked to church with... I wish I could live it over again in a much longer version.” – Justin Wheatley, visual artist

“I especially enjoyed the conversations we had while traveling to different events or winding down in the evenings. Sharing experiences like a Broadway musical or exploring new foods added an extra layer of connection.

My favorite painting moment was painting on the street; despite the risk, it was exhilarating and rewarding. My other was when Glen got me some hot chocolate in the middle of painting. But above all, it was the people I met who made the experience unforgettable.” – Michelle Nixon, visual artist

What did you gain from the Artists Residency?

“I liked being around like-minded people. It was amazing to be with this group where I could discuss ideas, where we could support each other, it was such a fantastic place. And it wasn’t just the residents, but it was the whole organization. We formed this little group of being cheerleaders and having cheerleaders around us, and I walked away with so much confidence. I think that’s the greatest thing that the Residency gave me.”
- Sarah Lynne Lindsay, visual artist
