The Lost Months of Brooklyn

Jeffrey Lee Butler

Scenes of Brooklyn, New York photographed during “PAUSE” (stay-at-home) orders in April and May, 2020.

A note about the gallery: Images with black borders are shot on film using a medium format camera (image below). All others are photographed on a digital camera.

Made possible by a grant from the Center for Latter-day Saint Arts

THE STORY IS HOW THINGS ARE DIFFERENT BUT REMAIN THE SAME…

Brooklyn street photography is appealing. COVID-19 has made it even more so. Buildings, geography, weather are all the same. People, clothing, customs have changed. This is a unique time to capture Brooklyn’s streets on film. The streets are empty. The people who are out have a story to tell. The story is how things are different but remain same. The architecture is the same, but looks different without the people it was built to serve. People’s eyes are the same but now look over a mask suspiciously at people who get closer than 6-feet. I want to capture this slight shift of the new reality. I will be shooting [the majority of shots in] film. Much like the pandemic, film forces intention and thought. —Jeffrey Lee Butler, 2020
