Proveau Salon
The artist David Hockney once wrote, “What an artist is trying to do for people is bring them closer to something, because of course art is about sharing. You wouldn’t be an artist unless you wanted to share an experience, a thought.” Throw in a backyard potluck meal and you have an instant community. In Provo, Utah, a group of artists and friends meets quarterly to share art, nosh, and connect. It is called Proveau Salon, and the gathering takes place at the home of artist Megan Knoblock Geilman. It is organized by herself and Sariah Masterson. They write, “We are attempting to revive a centuries-old tradition of literary and cultural salons that were typically held in people’s private residences.” The next edition of the Salon is Saturday, May 6.
But you don’t live near Provo, you say? Why not start your own salon? Begin small by having some friends over to your place to show or talk about art. Have any painter friends? Get them involved and make a one-night-only gallery. Own a piano? Well, suddenly you’ve got a concert hall. A big screen TV? Voila, a film screening room. Have a couch? We call that salon seating.
