Joseph, the Oratorio

Acclaimed composer Dan Montez is preparing to debut his 8th oratorio titled, Joseph on March 25, 2023 at 3pm at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in Croton, New York. Taconic Opera is presenting the work with full orchestra, professional soloists, and opera chorus. The oratorio is based on the well-known scriptural figure, Jacob's son with the coat of many colors. Montez writes in the program note, “Joseph is seen throughout Judaism, Christianity, and Islam as a prophet. He is a major figure in all three faiths, ultimately saving Israel. The theme of familial forgiveness, accompanied by Joseph’s love for his brothers, in spite of their behavior, is a hallmark of the story.” It has been nearly three hundred years since a composer has set this sacred narrative as an oratorio. Montez credits his musical influence from Ravel, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, and Puccini and as such employs impressionistic textures and quartal harmonies to portray the emotions of the story. Joseph builds on Montez’s prior experience having composed seven oratorios with titles such as Esther, David, Job, Jonah, and Enoch. - Benjamin Taylor ( Learn more about the upcoming premiere and purchase tickets at taconicopera.org)
