It’s Never Too Late

The Listings is our events calendar of works by LDS creative artists, and we do our best to capture all that we can. Still, we occasionally come across something interesting that has already ended by the time we learn about it. No! To quote Cher, “If I could turn back time.” When we encounter something after the fact, we document it nonetheless with an entry in The Listings. That way, you can still search and learn about it; click on “Previous Events.”

Here are a few works from last month definitely worth a belated look.

Juan Antonio Santoyo is a composer, pianist, and director of the opera company, Tarhiani Ópera México. His new concert work for solo piano is titled Las Vigilias, and each of its sixteen movements is the story—he describes them as offerings—of (and to) a beloved, deceased member of his childhood in Oaxaca to the present day. The composer performed the work and made it available on YouTube for Dia de los Muertos. A full audio recording is forthcoming. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqCph7zA2nI

Meanwhile, additional works by Juan Antonio Santoyo were performed in a tour of M5 The Mexican Brass. The ensemble is Latin America’s most success ensemble for Brass Quintet (trumpets, French horn, trombone, and tuba), and part of the group’s purpose is to commission contemporary Mexican composers. Two works by Santoyo appeared on the program, Brasscination, November 6, 2022, performed at the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. https://m5mexicanbrass.com/calendar/

The Utah Masters Fine Art Tour is sort of like a parade of home except it’s to visit some of Utah’s most recognized visual artists in their studios, including a few with international reputations who otherwise do not exhibit in Utah. It’s too late for this year, but it is an annual event. You can sign up for next year’s tour and see which artists you missed this in 2022.  https://www.utahmastersfineart.com/?fbclid=IwAR0ezM1GDYSb8dLhUMpGQbhAG_a5kHfImOxS_ydgBn3GNt-zC0Ce-WAU9qE

Nigerian singer-songwriter TeeRoy Tyobee has performed alongside prominent vocalists, 2face idibia, M I Abaga, Teckno, among others. After he joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 2016, TeeRoy’s music shifted to songs of inspiration, including “The Plan,” which is about the Plan of Salvation. He recently released a new song "We Are" on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZAjRlobW14). This new song is unlike his previous releases in that it is a call to action—an anthem—an upbeat song which delivers the powerful, undisputable message that we are more than what we think we are. https://www.symphonyofvoices.net/featured-artist/teeroy-tyobee?fbclid=IwAR2FupZO5ZegAr_ervDPr4gepw5jgCMUFuqErfxwlxZdr31EB5gvFZ6ZOQo

Shirae Telford released in October a new Christmas music video. In her notes to the YouTube post, the singer-songwriter notes that she does not remember writing the song 8 years ago, but after her brother Stephen was killed at the age of 28 by a drunk driver in 2016, this song brought her comfort in its message to “Fear Not.” The cinematic video of the Nativity is the result. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Z7b7oe56sw
