A Couple of Bands You Should Know
Even though they are a contemporary band, there is something very nostalgic about The Moss. For those who were around during the early days of Seattle grunge and who then graduated to One Republic and Keane, The Moss will make you long for flannel shirts as you drive alone on the highway remembering your high school crush. Originally from Hawaii, these four guys started making music just for fun, and that hobby turned into a career. Their next stop was Salt Lake City where like most indie bands, they developed a following. Very much in the vein of the “little engine that could” they did everything themselves, even mixing their own albums because without a major label, they had no choice. But humble beginnings haven’t hindered their music nor their style. If anything, it’s only added more depth and more flavor because it’s coming from a place of earnestness and sincerity. Sing like no one is listening and pretty soon, people will. In addition to a multi-city tour (which is quickly selling out) their current EP, Insomnia is available on all streaming platforms.
Another group drawing from days gone by is alternative bluegrass group, The Barefoot Movement. Led by Noah Wall and Tommy Morris, the two met in high school and have been making a melting pot of bluegrass, folk, and country music ever since. Noah, who is the lead singer (and also plays multiple string instruments) has the powerful yet soothing vocal qualities of Alison Krauss and Linda Rondstadt. In addition to their multiple albums, touring engagements, and awards, during the pandemic they released a series of singles under the umbrella, “Covers for the Cause.” The songs which were originally only on their Youtube channel can now be streamed on all platforms with proceeds going to Soles4Souls. – Joël René Scoville (For information on tour venues for The Moss and The Barefoot Movement, see The Listings.)
