Gift Guide: Music

1. Lindsey Stirling's Christmas album, Snow Waltz, is like a holiday party itself--a gathering of familiar friends (with a few surprise guests) dressed up in new ways brought together with a little help--in this case with performances by Bonnie McKee, Frawley, and David Archuleta. You could just listen on Spotify, sure, but wouldn't it feel more festive to take the vinyl edition of Snow Waltz for a spin? (Concord Records, LP) $22.98

2. The passing from ovarian cancer of Mimi Parker, co-founder of the alt-rock band, Low, in November is a loss for the trio, for their many fans, and for music itself. This black, understated t-shirt sums up how many are feeling right now given the news. Low indeed. (Low, Hey What, t-shirt) $29.00

3. The folk/pop band The National Parks' members come from Northern Utah and Colorado, but their new hat feels official enough for a Utahn to wear with confidence. Under their logo reads, "Band from the Beehive State," which might be tongue-in-cheek given that the image is of a saguaro cactus. (The National Parks, Beehive State Hat) $25.00

4. It takes a certain kind of fan to seek out limited edition imports of their favorite band's music. The Killer's seventh and most recent outing, Pressure Machine, might be a landmark worthy of such collectibility. The British limited edition cassette has covers with a red, gray, white, or black cover. (Island Records, cassette) $21.99

5. ”This is magic in my bones," sings Imagine Dragons on their new album Bones. You know who's not tapping their toes after listening to the title track? Nobody alive. All the more reason to commemorate losing control with a set of stickers from the band. (Imagine Dragons, sticker set, 10.5 x 8 inches, 5 stickers) $10.00

6. You can't lug a piano around in your backpack, but The Piano Guys' keychain in the shape of a piano with a cello hidden inside it will liven up that keyring. Theoretically, it could be used for, you know, actual keys. (2 x 1.5 inches, anodized metal) $7.99

7. Not a badge of honor exactly, but the flower enamel pin celebrating Panic! At The Disco's Viva Las Vengeance album and tour signals something joyous, nonetheless. (enamel pin, 2.25 inches diameter) $10.00

8. Certainly you know the crime-fighting, superhero, new wave, synth-pop, rock and roll band, The Aquabats! Every band should have such a mission statement: They fight the forces of evil and boredom across the land in their BattleTram using positive vibes and rad music. (Gloopy, Li'l Bat decal) $3.50

9. Michael D. Young's An Advent Carols Countdown: Stories Behind the Most Beloved Music of Christmas measures out love for music and Christmas in a daily dosage. As the title suggests, readers are treated to a Christmas carol each day of December (through Christmas) with the lyrics, a QR code line to the Tabernacle Choir on Temple Square performing the carol, and the author's lively history of the carols themselves. (Shadow Mountain Publishing, hardcover, 108 pp.) $15.99

10. The longest-running holiday show in Utah (if you don't count The Nutcracker) is the annual Christmas concert by Kurt Bestor. In its 35th year, the composer, singer-songwriter goes on the road to Kayenta, UT, Gunnison, UT, Pocatello, ID, Salt Lake City, UT, Park City, UT (multiple venues, 12/1-25). (kurtbestor.com/tour) see website for ticket information

11. Jenny Oaks Baker & Family Four is joined by Alex Sharpe and Jason F. Wright in Christmas concerts in St. George, UT, Salt Lake City, UT, Cedar City, UT, Idaho Falls, ID, Lehi, UT, Mesa, AZ, Tysons Corner, VA, Athens, GA, Sandy Springs, GA, and Huntsville, AL. (12/1-22). (jennyoaksbaker.com/tour) tickets starting at $20.00, prices vary by venue

12. The sprawling Millennial Choirs and Orchestras mount a Christmas concert, Star of Night, in Mesa, AZ, Salt Lake City, UT, and Cosa Mesa, CA (12 concerts over three venues, 12/1-12). (millennial.org) tickets starting at $21.00

13. Those too far from Salt Lake City or unable to win the ticket lottery to the 2022 Tabernacle Choir Christmas Concert are invited to join the virtual music broadcast, The Promise of Christmas. (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) free streaming

14. Is there something in the water that makes residents of Salt Lake City, Utah join a chorus? So many choruses; so few days in December. One of the best is the Salt Lake Choral Artists, and their annual concert of holiday favorites includes the SLCA Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Vocal Artists, Young Choral Artists, and Chamber Orchestra. (SLAC, 12/09-10). (saltlakechoralartists.org) tickets from $10.00-20.00
