Press Release: The Mormon Arts Center Issues a Call for Submissions to Explore New Artistic Boundaries

NEW YORK, New York – September 28, 2018 – The Mormon Arts Center is pleased to announce a Call For Submissions. It is open to scholars, curators, artists, performers, and others who desire to engage with the goals of the Mormon Arts Center to display and perform artwork by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New York City and elsewhere, to publish scholarship and criticism about art of our culture to reach a wider public, and to establish a comprehensive archive of artwork by members of our faith, 1830 to the present.

Individuals are invited to submit ideas for presentations, events, exhibitions, performances, Center programs, and scholarly works for publication to be completed over the next three years. Selected projects will debut at the annual Mormon Arts Center Festivals in New York City, beginning in 2019.

“Since the inception of the Mormon Arts Center Festival, we have focused on a number of different artistic initiatives,” said Richard Bushman, co-founder of the Mormon Arts Center. “We feel the time is right to gather input from others who are passionate about exploring artwork by members of our faith in new ways.”

The Center intends to select numerous, viable proposals, fund the chosen events, exhibitions, performances and/or publications and will provide a paid commission to any individual whose idea is chosen for their aid in the development and execution of the idea.

“We feel this Call for Submissions will take the exploration of art of our culture to the next level,” said Glen Nelson, co-founder of the Mormon Arts Center Festival. “We hope individuals will take this call to action to heart, to help expand the boundaries of this initiative.”

The review of submissions is ongoing but the deadline for initiatives that will be highlighted in the 2019 Mormon Arts Center Festival is December 15, 2018. Ideas that are submitted after that day will be considered for future art festivals.

Potential applicants are encouraged to review past projects completed by the Mormon Arts Center to understand the scope and rigor of activities and aspirations. For more information about the submission process, please visit the Mormon Arts Center Call for Submissions.
